Lectures

1. Marion Rike Metzger did research on the relevance of city farms for nature conservation and nature education. As an extra-curricular place for learning, city farms offer huge potential to communicate the aims of nature conservation in society by increasing the population ´s acceptance of and commitment to such aims. Besides targeted nature and environmental education, the key function of city farms is to give children and teenagers a direct experience of nature. In such a setting, nature conversation obtains its power of persuasion not through arguments of science and rationality, but predominantly through people encountering nature in an emotional way. Nonetheless, species conservation and biodiversity are also important issues at the sites. A schoolmasterly approach is not workable in such “open playgrounds”. It would be a valuable exercise indeed to explore in further depth the potential offered by city farms to foster nature education and conservation.

2. Dr. Frank Andraschko is working for AGIL - Institute for Applied Archaeology, a combination of archaeologists, craftsmen, educationalists, biologists, media experts and others with more than 15 years experience in the broad field of experimental archaeology and "living" history from archaeological working replicas to educational school programs, creative courses in old craftsmen´s technology, practical experience holidays, complete site info-systems, live-action presentations, and entire projects with practical translations for the public and private clients.

3. Toni Anderfuhren comes from Switzerland. He calls himself a play dreamer. He will explain some thoughts about play areas appropriate for children. Besides, he brings his rich fund of experiences with children and their play needs, reports into playful language about rooms and space for children and does not gamble away also the chance to do new and unconventional approaches.

Workshops

1. The horse as a partner

Objective:

We think that a horse understands us all the time – but do we always understand horses in the right way? How do they show us their satisfaction or insecurity? Horses transmit very clear signals and respond directly to people. To create a proper communication with a horse it is essential for humans to deal with the whole creature.

Content of the activity:

What and how does a horse see?
What do the facial and body expression of a horse stand for?
How much or less percieves a horse?
How do horses communicate with each other?
Basics of the social behaviour of horses

Methods:

Lots of knowledge can be felt or "walked" by oneself. Further information are going to be shown and explained directly on the horse. Leading and being leaded will be practiced in couples. Questions in addition about our "partner" the horse are very welcome.

Duration of the activity:

Ca. 1,5 - 2 hours

Qualifications:

There are no qualifications required – you might need a raincoat or a sunhat!

Instructor:

Jana Erler ( aged 43 ) is a social education worker, trainer in equitation (VFD: " Organisation of the leisure time riders and drivers in Germany") and has a special formation in horse based pedagogy. She has been working for the Activity Playground ASP Panama in Dresden-Neustadt since 1999.

Every participant is going to manufacture a little bag out of leather. Thereby the required basics of handling and working with leather are going to be tought.

Content of the activity:

Short introduction to the fabrication and treatment of leather

Presentation of the patterns that can be made with little effort in 1,5 hours.

Methods:

Providing the basics and learning by doing

Duration of the activity:

Ca. 1,5 to 2 hours

Instructor:

Andreas J. Mehnert ( aged 55 ) is a saddler and a free-lancer with his creative workshop "Unikum" (Manufacture of unique products out of leather, wood and metall) He has a long experience of working with children and teenagers and instructing them in the creative treatment of leather.

3. Doing Social work at the Activity Playground

Subject

The two activity playgrounds „Panama" and „Eselnest" are located in social hotspots of Dresden. The possibilities that are provided by these playgrounds, are frequently taken by children and adolescents, that don’t find a lot of social support from their families. The activity playground turns into a ‘second home’ (sometimes their first „real" home) and the social education workers become their trusted persons, who help them with their small and big problems.

Content

What are the problems these children and adolescents, who come to the activity playgrounds, face every day?

How can social workers find out something about the children’s worries?

How shall we handle them and what kind of support can we find, respectively do we need, in the municipal district?

What is the legal basis that Germany provides in these cases?

Methods

A lecture is going to be given, accompanied by photos of the daily work Questions are very welcome.

Duration

Ca. 1,5 hours

Qualifications

There are no special qualifications required.

Instructor:

Thomas Rommel (aged 28) is a social education worker. He’s been working at the „Eselnest" (which is a part of „Spielprojekt e.V.) in Dresden-Pieschen since 2004.

Where do we stay?

We will stay in a hostel named “boofe” in the city of Dresden - the capitol of Saxon. The boofe is situated in a district called “Äussere Neustadt”. This part of the town has a very particular atmosphere. People living here are really multi-cultural. You will find a lot of bars, pubs, cafés, restaurants, shops and small enterprises. Many artists found a new home in that district. Their work is reflected in numerous small theatres and galleries.

More Information:
Hostel „Die Boofe”
Hechtstraße 10
01097 Dresden
fon.: 0049-3 51-8013361

How to find the Hostel?

From Dresden-Neustadt station:
About 12 minutes way to walk. Walk left following the embankment on Dammweg until you will reach Bischofsplatz. There you cross the tramway tracks and turn into Hechtstraße.

From Dresden-Hauptbahnhof (mainstation):
Take the tram No. 7 heading for Weixdorf. Leave at stop "Bischofsweg" and walk along Bischofsweg and Bischofsplatz towards the railway bridge. Turn right to Hechtstraße.
